FIFA president joins
RP football celebration
BY CEDELF TUPAS

FIFA president Sepp Blatter will visit Manila on Dec. 7 to join in the celebration of a century of football in the Philippines .

This was announced at the Philippine Sportswriters' Association Forum in Manila yesterday by newly-elected Philippine Football Federation president Mari Martinez, who also expressed optimism he could unite all PFF members in time for Blatter's visit.

During Saturday's PFF polls, Martinez was eventually declared the winner over Ed Formoso, 15-14, despite contentions from his rival's allies that he did not have the “absolute majority” as stated in the PFF by-laws.

The 55-year-old Martinez , who saw action in the 1972 World Cup qualifiers, said he will arrange a one-on-one talk with Blatter during his 24-hour visit.

"I hope to discuss with Mr. Blatter ways that FIFA can help us regain the glory we used to enjoy in football a long time ago," Martinez said.

Cathy Rivilla, who is spearheading the preparations for Blatter's visit, said the FIFA head's appearance in the Philippines cannot be overemphasized and could well signal a boom in the sport.

Blatter will be on hand in the gala night that will honor Philippine football icons, the late Paulino Alcantara, an Ilonggo, who scored 357 goals in 357 games for Spanish giants FC Barcelona.

The honor roll also includes Nomads, Cheng Hua Tigers and Lions Athletic Club, former PFF president Rene Adad, and ex-PFF secretary general Fernando Alvarez, Rivilla added.

Martinez also said he has decided to retain Pablito Araneta as PFF general secretary. The PFF head earlier told the DAILY STAR that he intends to hire former national coach Juan Cutillas as PFF technical director.*CPT
