QPP, Lopue's oust
SJI alumni rivals

Top seeds Queen of Peace Parish and Batch 1999-2000 Lopue's scored contrasting victories Saturday to advance to the next round in the St. John's Institute Alumni Basketball Batch Wars at the SJI Activity Center in Bacolod City .

Arvin Gustilo, Rey Pandoro and Arnel Castillo joined forced forces for 51 points as QPP nipped Batch 1993 Imay's, 82-81. Hastening Imay's defeat was the absence of Andy Angodung, the team's leading scorer and rebounder, and Juan Miguel Golez, who were both suspended.

Nilo Lizares and Mark Antonio tried to turn things around for Imay's, combining for 40 points but it was not enough as Gustilo and Pandoro scored clutch baskets down the stretch to preserve the win.

Not to be outdone, Lopue's ousted Foodman with a 107-88 victory. Paolo Li finished with 18 points, while Rhett Demonteverde and Jason Yap chipped in 18 and 15 respectively as Lopue's stayed unbeaten in six games.

Also advancing were Batch 2001-02 Alfie's Construction, a 78-77 winner over the SJI Falcons, and Batch 1990-91 Marby, which unleashed a late 15-0 attack that paved the way for a 95-87 victory over Batch 1993-94 Copix One.

Bryan Aguilar led Alfie's with 19 points and Vincent Genovea added 14.

Marby drew 31 points from Pewee Demonteverde but it was Richard Co, who delivered the telling blows by scoring 13 of his 19 markers in the fourth quarter. Bol Manaloto added 13 points.

Marby also spoiled the breakout game of Alex Fernandez, who stepped up for the injured Vincent Javelosa and Michael Ang and pumped in 24 points. Chris Castro and Tubby villanueva added 12 and 11, respectively. *CPT
