The Department of Public Works and Services will come up with a report on the initial implementation of the waste segregation program in Bacolod City.
Bacolod Councilor Mona Dia Jardin, who is in charge of the Solid Waste Management program of the city, said she will ask the garbage collectors to provide her a report this week to check on the compliance by the 61 barangays with Republic Act 9003 or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000.
The trial period for the “no collection no segregation” policy that was implemented a week before Holy Week, will run for 15 days, she said and
barangays have been asked to start complying with the segregation of garbage at source as required in the city’s operation of its sanitary landfill in Barangay Felisa.
Jardin said the sanitary landfill and the materials recovery facility are now ready for use but the city has to ensure the compliance of the waste segregation so that the sanitary landfill will be utilized according to its purpose.
Bacolod generates more than 200 tons of garbage a day and the sanitary landfill will be filled up if the city does not impose waste segregation, she said.
The Department of Environment and Natural Resources has already issued notice of violation to several Local Government Units in the country but Bacolod is not included because it has complied with the establishment of a sanitary landfill and the materials recovery facility, she said.*CGS
