Two die, six injured
on Holy Week

BY ADRIAN NEMES III

Vehicular accidents, drowning and hacking incidents marred Holy week in Bacolod City, claimed the lives of two persons and caused injuries to six others, including a policeman.

Police identified the fatalities as Joselito Abelardo, 47, of Bago City, Negros Occidental, and Venus Pagalilawan, 44, of Purok Neptune in Bacolod.

Abelardo died while being treated at the Corazon Locsin Montelibano Memorial Regional Hospital at about 7:35 a.m. on Good Friday, about four hours after he fell from his motorcycle at Araneta Extension, Bacolod.

Investigation conducted by Police Officer 3 Orlando Caporal showed that Abelardo was heading south of Araneta Extension when his vehicle sideswiped pedestrian Joy Pinongan, 41, of Purok Sisi in Sitio Magsungay, Brgy. Singcang Airport.

Abelardo lost control of his vehicle and fell to the ground with his passenger, Jerry Hermetano, 46, also of Bago. Pinongan was rushed to the Bacolod Adventist Medical Center while Hermetano and Abelardo were rushed to the CLMMRH.

Pagalaliwan died while being treated at CLMMRH at about 4:15 p.m. Friday a few minutes after she allegedly drowned in the river in Purok Neptune.

Investigation conducted by Police Officer 1 Art Zureta showed that Pagalaliwan was found floating at about 4 p.m. by several residents who immediately informed the police.

Pagalaliwan was believed to be under the influence of liquor when the incident happened as there were witnesses who saw her drinking before her body was found, Zureta reported.

Three were also injured when a rumble took place in Brgy. 39, Bacolod on Holy Thursday.

Police Officer 1 Roberto Gaurana identified those injured as Antonio Silhay, Argie Lovero and Jonathan Blanca, 46, all residents of Purok Katilingban in Brgy. 39.

Investigation showed that Silhay was having an argument with a certain Larry Loyola when Blanca intervened and hacked him while he was getting water from a nearby canal.

When Lovero saw the incident, he came to rescue Silhay but was also hacked by Blanca.

Blanca, who was also injured during the brawl, escaped towards Sitio Magsungay but was apprehended by members of the Public Safety Management Company several minutes later and was rushed to the CLMMRH with Lovero and Silay.

Senior Police Officer 3 Nilo Sumagaysay of Police Station 3 was also injured when his motorcycle collided with the van of James Parreño, 24, of Santa Clara Subdivision, Bacolod near the subdivision gate at about 11:27 p.m. Tuesday.

City Police Director Senior Supt. Ricardo de la Paz, meanwhile, reported that the observance of the Holy Week was generally peaceful.*APN
