Gatchalian eyes
senate seat
BY GILBERT BAYORAN

Valenzuela City Mayor Sherwin Gatchalian yesterday signified his intention to run for senator under the Pwersa ng Masang Pilipino (PMP) of former President Joseph Estrada,

Gatchalian was reported in the shortlist of possible Senate bets of the United Nationalist Alliance, an umbrella organization of PMP and PDP-Laban of Vice-President Jejomar Binay.

While the filing of certificates of candidacy for the May 2013 midterm elections is set on Oct. 1 to 5, Gatchalian, who also served as a one-time congressman of Valenzuela, has visited Negros Occidental thrice, in a span of one week, which others said is for getting the pulse of Negrenses.

Gatchalian, who met yesterday with Governor Alfredo Marañon , before attending the Himamaylan City annual fiesta, said he was amazed by the transformation of Negros Occidental into a “booming” province, in terms of infrastructure development.

He said he was initially informed that he, Cagayan Rep. Jack Enrile, San Juan Rep. JV Ejercito, former Senators Ernesto Maceda and Juan Miguel Zubiri will be in the possible senatorial line up of the PMP.

The United Nationalist Alliance was reported to be negotiating for a possible team-up with the Laban ng Demokratikong Pilipino and the Nacionalista Party and it hopes to finalize its senatorial lineup in July or August.

Gatchalian, who was among the The Outstanding Young Men of 2011 in the Philippines, is also a member of the Board of Governors of the Philippine National Red Cross.*GPB
