SAF forces told:
Work for peace, dev’t

BY GILBERT BAYORAN
CAMP ANICETO LACSON, Victorias City – Newly-arrived troopers of the police elite Special Action Force were reminded yesterday to be instruments of government’s peace and development effort in Negros island.

SAF Director Catalino Cuy, who visited the 6th SAF Battalion headquarters in Sagay City, said being members of the police elite unit and as law enforcers, should only be secondary to their main purpose in the province.

In 1995, two battalions of SAF were also deployed in Negros, following the pull-out of the Army unit for assignment in Mindanao. However, they were returned to Manila three years after.

A company-sized unit of the 6th SAF Battalion is being temporarily stationed in Sagay City.

Cuy said they are targeting to complete the deployment of 6th SAF Battalion in Western Visayas, before the end of 2012.

The 6th and 7th SAF Battalions were only activated on May by the PNP.

Cuy said the 7th SAF Battalion is earmarked for deployment in Region 8, or Eastern Visayas.

The SAF troopers are trained in domestic counter-terrorism, law enforcement and commando-type unconventional warfare.

Cuy said they are considering the island of Negros among the test mission areas for graduating SAF trainees.

Senior Supt. Allan Guisihan, who is now the chief of directorial staff of the Police Regional Office 6, reminded SAF troopers that they are deployed in Negros Occidental to help in the peace and order campaign, and “not to destroy the peace and order”.*GPB
